Is Goa always a summer paradise? Even in the winter months, this sunny state sees visitors from across the world who come to enjoy the sun, sand and surf. However in the Monsoon it is different. Many activities have sprung up to cater to the intrepid tourist’s appetite for adventure including a number of Monsoon water sports and adventure activities. Traditionally, come the monsoons, the seas become impossible to navigate safely, leading to a dearth of activities, but no more. Thanks to Southern River Adventures’ white water rafting or river rafting, the Goa water sports scene has been revitalised during the monsoon season.
Take a trip away from the normal Goan beach scenes into the wilderness of the Western Ghats. Ride the rapids on the river Mahdei and add a whole new dimension to your Goa vacation .
River rafting starts with a meet and greet at the Earthen Pot restaurant (next to the government hospital) in Valpoi in North Goa. There are 3 modes of getting to Mahdei River:
From here, experienced guides transport your group to The Mahdei River to enjoy the thrills and chills of class two and three rapids. They also bring you back to the Earthen Pot after you’ve had your thrills on the river.
During the monsoon season; beginning at the end of June/start of July and finishing in September (depending on the rains), the white water rafting tour takes place twice a day, every day.
The first group leaving in the morning reports at 9:30am. The second group which leaves in the afternoon reports at 2:30pm. Both groups have the same reporting point, The Earthen Pot Restaurant.
The entire trip can vary in duration but it is usually about 2 and a half to 3 hours, this all depends on the rapids and the water levels. However this time frame includes transport to and from our destination, so you know how much time to set aside for this adventure.
The water sport is designed to keep it interesting throughout the 10 km stretch of river water rafting. Rapids with names like "Big Daddy" "Giant Haystacks" etc, are going to make sure that you have a blast and get thoroughly soaked.
- Minimum number of 6 guests to run a trip.
- Maximum number of seats per trip is 20.

Therefore we advise everyone in the group to carry a change of clothes and shoes, as well as a towel to dry off with. If you think you might feel hungry after all that excitement be sure to carry some spare cash and you will be able to eat at the restaurant at the end of the trip.
Now going on a rafting adventure is one thing, but you surely will want to have a memento or two to commemorate the trip. Photos are great and a part of any trip with friends and family. However white water rafting is rarely a good combination with cell-phones or cameras, while you may have a waterproof phone or an underwater camera, it’s still possible to lose it when navigating a particularly torrid stretch of water.
Don’t worry though, Southern River Adventures have got you covered, we’ll take the risk for you and use our equipment to document your whole trip, and once you reach then end you can take those photographs home with you. Those who wish to purchase printed photographs can do so; or, for those who prefer digital copies, can carry a pen-drive and receive their photos that way.
If you like outdoor adventures then this is a must for you. No longer is Goa a place you can only enjoy when the sun is out! The tour operators at Southern River Adventures are highly experienced and have a sterling reputation; having navigated over 50,000 people safely through the rapids without a single accident.
